Can falls in patients with dementia be prevented? | Author(s) | Fiona E Shaw, Rose Anne Kenny |

Annotation | Falls cause substantial morbidity and mortality in patients with dementia. Impairments of gait and balance, medication, cardiovascular problems and the environment can all contribute to falls in this patient group. Treatment of these conditions reduces falls in cognitively normal older people. While multidisciplinary intervention to modify these risk factors for falls is feasible for patients with dementia, data on effectiveness in preventing falls are not yet available. Even so, work to prevent falls in patients with cognitive impairment and dementia and research related to such work should be encouraged. (RH). |
