AnnotationThis consultation document, on which comments are invited by the end of April 1999, sets out the Government's future strategy for improving policies for older people, and looks at some of the progress that has been made over the past 18 months. It focuses on eight areas: healthy living; income; employment; travel; at home (housing and heating); crime; care and carers; and active lives (volunteering, lifelong learning, and libraries). Future initiatives include: publication of a Code of Good Practice to promote the employment of people of all ages; report of The Royal Commission on Long-Term Care in 1999; publication of a National Service Framework for Older People in April 2000; publication of a consultation draft of the Long-Term Care Charter in early 1999, and publication of a National Strategy for Carers in 1999; setting up Better Government for Older People (BGOP) pilots and a new "learning network" to share best practice in service provision to older people; organising research on older people's attitudes and ambitions; working with the business and scientific sectors through the Foresight panel to identify future opportunities and market trends for older people; and supporting the 1999 UN Year of Older Persons.
