AnnotationThe aim of the conference was to provide a special day for carers from Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham to share their views on what they want and need. The conference also aimed to promote a wider understanding of the role of carers and how they can be supported in relation to general practice and other agencies, including other statutory and voluntary bodies with a commitment to carers. The main themes arising included: recognition of the carers' role and the essential support they provide for patients; identifying when carers need support, before crisis point is reached; changes in work practices within the primary health care team, to accommodate carers' needs and to improve support; provision of relevant, up-to-date information on help and advice available; respite care; training of GPs and other health care professionals about carers' needs; and consistent standards of health provision across the three boroughs.
