AnnotationA series of eight focus groups was conducted throughout Scotland during March-April 1998 to gain a better understanding of older people's perceptions about the environment, and to investigate the possibilities for involving older people more fully in voluntary activities. Findings revealed that there was a fairly high level of awareness about environmental issues, although few older people were aware of organisations concerned with the environment. Participants felt responsibility for the world they were passing on to the next generation, and showed interest in issues such as recycling. With regard to older people's involvement, it was found that a small number of individuals were members of environmental organisations, and some were or had been involved in practical volunteering activities. Overall, there was a feeling that older people could do very little except in relation to their own individual lifestyles. The report concludes with suggestions on how to involve older people in environmental issues and activities. (AKM).
