AnnotationThis report contains clinical guidelines for improving the quality of health care of older people in long-term care. It updates two previous publications by the Royal College of Physicians: `High quality long-term care for elderly people' (1992) and `Standardised assessment scales for elderly people' (1992). Guidelines are presented for the following areas: positive care for people with dementia; detecting and managing depression; overcoming disability; preserving autonomy; promoting urinary and faecal incontinence; optimising medication; preventing and managing falls; and preventing and managing pressure sores. Advice for providers and commissioners/ purchasers are included. (AKM).
