AnnotationIt has been widely accepted by health care professionals that inter-professional collaboration is necessary in the identification and management of elder abuse, with the general practitioner (GP) and other primary health care staff playing a crucial role. As part of a research project into GPs' knowledge and experience of elder abuse, the authors explored the nature and extent of GPs' contact with other professionals and agencies in response to cases of suspected elder abuse. All 107 GPs in Tower Hamlets were mailed a self-completion questionnaire, and 68% responded. Results showed that GPs were most likely to be in contact with other health service professionals. Only half of the respondents were in regular contact with social services in situations of suspected abuse. Overall, the respondents made little contact with three key voluntary sector organisations in the locality: Age Concern, the Carers National Association (CNA) and the local branch of MIND. (AKM).
