Warning: age hazards ahead focus on age discrimination | Author(s) | Sally Greengross |

Pages | pp 7-9 |
Keywords | Ageism ; Employment of older people ; Financial services [older people] ; Health services ; Law. |
Annotation | The word discrimination has several meanings, a dictionary definition being "unfavourable treatment based on prejudice, especially race, age, or sex". Another definition is "the power of discriminating or observing differences". Does discrimination imply prejudice? Or is it merely a way of recognising differences in the course of making rational judgments? The author puts the view that age discrimination is causing pain, frustration and humiliation. She calls on the Government to "make discrimination a thing of the past", the theme of a national campaign by Age Concern in 1998, to press for legislation on the issue. (RH). |
