AnnotationDespite recent advances in our understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), it is unlikely that a cure will be available in the near future. Even if a cure were available, it is unlikely that it would be effective for all conditions. Therefore, a large number of demented people will have to be cared for in the foreseeable future. This editorial outlines the strengths and limitations of two studies in this issue of Journal of the American Geriatrics Society by Luchins et al, and by Murphy et al. Volicer concludes that care for those with advanced dementia must not be left to hospices alone: all healthcare professionals need to recognise the basic needs of dementia patients and their families.
