Annotation | Psychopharmacological management of dementia offers a challenge for clinicians. Both cognitive and non-cognitive symptomatology can be addressed pharmacologically, although no agent has so far be found that can halt or reverse the disease's progression. Social workers can contribute to the development of individual treatment plans encompassing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. This article provides an overview and description of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). It explores current and investigational agents used in the treatment of accompanying cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms, and suggests considerations for assessing certain aspects of pharmacological management. Knowledge of existing medications for medical management of dementia symptomatology, as well as those of investigational or developmental stages, can provide a basis for social work's contribution to an interdisciplinary health care team in such roles as patient and family educator, researcher, monitor, and resource broker.
