Annotation | Research has shown that low-level preventative services such as home maintenance and repairs are essential if older people are to maintain their independence and motivation to continue to look after themselves. The authors describe their research and report the views of older people. They explain why older people view services like housework as so important, and how they can delay or prevent the need for more providing services which are more costly. The project on which they report was funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), and published as 'That bit of help: the high value of low level preventative services for older people' (Policy Press, 1998).
