AnnotationResearch in the field of challenging behaviour and psychosocial intervention in care comes is reviewed in this Research Focus. Examples of the literature illustrate the subject with regard to: identifying challenging behaviour in care settings; psychosocial interventions based on the physical environment and enriched environments; and psychosocial therapies which use activity, bright light, complimentary therapy, applied behavioural analysis, or individual care planning. The physical environment, staff attitude, and care practices can reduce the impact of challenging behaviour, for which qualified staff and care assistants need training and support. However, the types of methodology described in the article are not seen as valid in current guidelines for evidence-based practice in mental health. More research is necessary if the efficacy of psychosocial intervention is to become accepted. (RH).
