AnnotationThe contribution of health economics to the analysis of prevention is examined in this book. Following the introduction in chapter one, the second chapter investigates the extent to which the health of nations determines the wealth of nations, or vice versa. Chapter three looks at the relevance of micro-economics to the study of prevention, and chapter four sets out the principles of economic appraisal. Case studies in primary and secondary prevention are presented in chapters five and six, while the methodological issues and problems found in the empirical studies are explored in chapter seven. The final chapters focus on the demand for prevention, identifies expenditure on prevention in the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK), presents a programme budget for the UK, and looks at the notion of a coherent prevention policy.
