AnnotationSince this book was first published in 1990 as `Self-help, social work and empowerment', the concept of empowerment has come to the fore in social work. This edition discusses meanings associated with empowerment, the origins of which lie partly in self-help. It explains what is meant by a paradigm shift, and develops a framework for empowerment-in-practice. The basis for empowerment through reflective practice is examined, before considering empowering individuals, groups, community groups, and organisations. The implications for evaluation and research are tackled. Attention is drawn to the problematic features of dealings between social workers and service users inherent in the tension between accountable work and empowerment-in-practice. (RH).
