AnnotationDuring 1997 and 1998, the Social Services Inspectorate (SSI) inspected seven local authority social services departments (SSDs), looking specifically at how they provided support and services for adults who were caring for older people and those with physical or learning disabilities or with mental illness. The main report, 'A matter of chance for carers? inspection of local authority support for carers' identified a number of key issues in relation to support for carers. This leaflet lists these issues, and provides questions to help carers and carers' groups to consider them. These concern: clarifying carers' entitlements and local procedures for working with carers; involving carers; supporting and using carers' groups and carers' centres; supporting carers of people with mental health problems; working with other agencies; supervising and monitoring front-line staff; and ensuring a fair share of support for carers across the SSD.
