AnnotationThe author focuses on her experiences of meeting an 83 year old woman with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and her 69 year old carer husband. The effects of AD on the family are described, as is the help from an occupational therapist and a day centre received following admission and subsequent discharge from hospital, and support received from the health service. Of particular value to the carer husband was his general practitioner (GP), who was his main source of information on AD, given his reluctance to seek help from organisations such as the Alzheimer's Disease Society (ADS) and the Carers National Association (CNA). The author has since done her own research into these organisations, and has found that much effort is being put into increasing public awareness of chronic illnesses, which should enable carers to look after their loved ones with greater ease in the future.
