Annotation | In most developed societies, middle aged people begin to plan for their retirement. From a financial gerontological point of view, attention should be focused not only on today's older people, their incomes and the cost of health policies, but also on today's middle-agers, who will be older people in 20 years time. The author examines the middle-ageing of the UK from an international perspective, comparing trends in percentages for age groups 45-64 and 65+ for Sweden, the US, Japan, and more and less developed countries. Three important sets of research questions are suggested by these trends: the changing human "Wealth Span" and financial literacy; income security and health care as a more "complex" Wealth Span; and intergenerational family responsibilities.
