Annotation | The literature concerning assessment and measurement of performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) supports the view that there is no consensus about what activities should be included in the assessment. As IADL is culturally and environmentally determined, it seems reasonable that no one assessment will ever meet the needs of all patient groups. Thus, different centres have developed their own IADL assessments to meet the needs of their particular patient or client groups. This review analyses the content of existing IADL assessments, IADL categories used, and level and scale of measurement. It is suggested that attention should be given to: the relevance of activities included in the assessment, including gender bias for the patient group in question; the detail of the information required, e.g. to measure clinical outcome or collect population data; whether the use of aids and equipment is allowed, and whether data are required at disability, functional limitation or impairment levels. If strategies to enable older people to live in their own homes are to be developed, more research is needed on using standardised IADL assessments. (RH). |
