AnnotationThis review focuses on the nursing contribution in identifying undernutrition, weight loss and feeding difficulty in older patients with dementia. Other related issues, including nutritional intervention in older people with dementia and the alleviation of feeding difficulty, are also included. Although there is clear association between undernutrition and weight loss, there has been a lack of research results concerning their alleviation. Some progress has been made in the assessment and measurement of feeding difficulty. Specific priorities for nursing research include the development of better scales for the assessment of feeding difficulty, the development of interventions for the alleviation of feeding difficulty, and research into their efficacy.
