AnnotationIn India, some 60 million older people (age 60+) constitute nearly 7% of the population. Thus, most families are involved in intergenerational interactions and associated strains of caring, which the author views as an important socio-psychological problem in the community. The main issues identified are: India as a country in demographic transition; changes in the family and lifestyle; older people as "power/minority" groups; promoting public awareness of ageing; caring for care-givers; ensuring quality of life for older people; and the role of the state and voluntary organisations in providing support.
