AnnotationThis study investigated the possible relationship between operation under general anaesthesia and age-related cognitive decline. Participants were 1257 healthy persons aged between 24 and 86 years, of which 946 had undergone surgery under general anaesthesia. Results showed that a history of an operation under general anaesthesia, the number of operations, and the total duration of anaesthesia significantly contributed to the number of subjective health-related complaints, but did not predict cognitive performance or memory complaints. No interactions with age were found. The results lend no support for the notion that a history of an operation under general anaesthesia is a determinant or risk factor for accelerated age-related cognitive decline. (AKM).
