AnnotationLong-term care (LTC) in the US is likely to face a financial crisis in the foreseeable future. Factors likely to bring this about include: an ageing population; reduced availability of informal caregivers; inadequate supply of domiciliary care services; increased nursing home fees; unwillingness to pay for services; and the approaching retirement of the baby-boom generation. This article proposes an affordable public policy solution, "LTC Choice", whereby older people keep their incomes and assets (including their homes) enabling them to live at home for as long as possible, before these are finally used for paying for long-term care.
