Annotation | Whereas many European countries face problems because of rapidly ageing populations, this is not the case in Ireland, where the population is ageing only slowly. It will therefore be possible to channel more resources to older people without imposing additional burdens on the working population. This policy statement from the Irish Senior Citizens Parliament suggests that ensuring adequate post-retirement incomes for all is an essential requirement, but it is not a sufficient answer to the problems of old age. There is also a need for adequate health services including the availability of services to enable older people to enjoy the maximum degree of independence in their own homes; and for sufficient residential care facilities for all that need them.
