AnnotationThe Consumer Analysis Group (CAG) carried out this in-depth telephone survey of 20 grandparents and 30 grandchildren. Where possible, the grandchildren spoken to were related to grandparents on the panel. CAG's technique was to gain statistical information, but more importantly, to encourage the subjects to open up in discussing either their true feelings about their role as grandparents, or their own views on how they felt about their own grandparents. These views were recorded, and quoted at appropriate points in the report, on themes such as: roles and responsibilities, and how these have changed; attitudes of grandchildren to the relationship with their grandparents; what makes a good grandparent; and giving and receiving presents. The idea of a special day for grandparents, as organised on this occasion by Age Concern England (ACE), was thought to be a good one. (RH).
