AnnotationThe Secretary of State for Health commissioned this inquiry, following publicity on reported deficiencies in systems of care of older people in hospital acute wards. The study of 16 randomly selected acute wards in general hospital in England brings together the views of older patients, their relatives, ward staff and managers regarding the experiences of care and caring, and observations on the quality of care. The key themes examined were: satisfaction with care; delays in admission; the physical environment; equipment and supplies; staff shortages; supply and quality of food and drink; feeding and nutrition; privacy and dignity; communication and pressures on staff; the role of the ward manager; agreeing the boundaries of care; staff attitudes towards older people; staff-patient interactions; staff appraisal and development; education and training; discharge from hospital; and integration versus specialism. Recommendations are made concerning involvement, roles and responsibilities of patients, their relatives, and staff. Services for older people need to be planned and commissioned with a view to eradicating disincentives and discontinuities of care from the health and social care system. 1999 reprint has ISBN 1902828003.
