Annotation | Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. It is most prevalent in postmenopausal women. Studies on the effects of aerobic exercise on lumbar spine bone mineral density in postmenopausal women were retrieved from computer searches (MEDLINE, Current Contents) as well as cross-referencing from the bibliographies of retrieved studies and review articles. A total of 17 effect sizes consisting of 330 subjects (192 exercise, 138 non-exercise) were included from the 10 studies that met criteria for inclusion: aerobic activity as the only exercise intervention; postmenopausal women as subjects; comparative non-exercise group included; changes in lumbar spine bone mineral density reported; and studies published in English language journals between January 1975 and December 1994. Results of this meta-analysis of treatment effect (percent change in lumbar spine bone mineral density) suggest that aerobic exercise helps to maintain lumbar spine bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.
