Annotation | The experience of older women with HIV/AIDS is explored in this article, focusing on their vulnerability to infection and lack of AIDS-related knowledge. Demographic trends in the United States (US) illustrate the increase of AIDS diagnoses among midlife women and black women. The proportion of adolescent and adult female cases among women aged 50 years and older has been 9% to 10% since 1989. However, the proportion of those women who are aged 65 years and over when diagnosed has declined from 36% in 1989 to 20% in 1997. Lack of accurate knowledge among women in older cohorts is shown with data from the 1994 National Health Interview Survey. Increased age is related to not having accurate information, including knowledge necessary to protect oneself from high-risk behaviour such as the effectiveness of condoms or that someone with AIDS can look well and healthy. Finally, research recommendations are made along with the suggestion to employ a life-course perspective when developing education, intervention, and treatment programmes for women. (AKM). |
