Annotation | The perceptions of clinical psychologists and referers to older adult psychology services were sampled in a qualitative research design. A semi-structured questionnaire was completed by a number of professions on what constituted appropriate referrals and areas of work for clinical psychology services to older people. There was a discrepancy between the perceptions of referers and those of clinical psychologists. Clinical psychologists mentioned a wide range of activities including direct and indirect clinical work, and indirect consultancy such as service planning and research and development. Referers mentioned only direct and indirect clinical applications. Possible factors influencing perceptions of the clinical psychologist's role included: lack of knowledge about psychology services; lack of communication between services; and perceived lack of resources within psychology services. These factors suggest that clinical psychology services for older people are not being as effectively used in terms of healthcare as they potentially could be. (RH). |
