Annotation | Previous research indicates that nurses have sought more training on screening and assessment of mental health problems. Recommendations from the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) that over 75 health checks should include screening for depression adds support to training primary health care team members. In response to this need, a training course in mental health care for primary care staff has been developed, implemented and evaluated in Salford. This article briefly describes and assesses the course, which increased participants' competence and confidence in recognising older people's mental health problems and in how to help. Results of this pilot phase justify further training for nurses in primary care. (RH). |
