AnnotationA scheme to introduce older people to each other to share interests and activities is described from inception and through its first year of operation. Results of a preliminary evaluation indicate that although activity formed the basis of the scheme, none of the participants had this as a main priority: all were hoping to gain at least some element of friendship. However, the activity itself is fundamental to the scheme's operation, providing people with a common interest and a less threatening basis on which to meet. The scheme thus facilitates friendship and in turn reduces loneliness. (RH).
