AnnotationThe care of mentally ill people living in long-term care (LTC) is a matter of great and ongoing concern. Day-to-day care providers in nursing homes and other LTC settings too often lack skills to understand and manage behavioural symptoms. Geriatric mental health training is required to meet the diverse needs of staff and patients, and to improve the quality of care provided. This US project explored the generalisability of a geriatric mental health training course that was used successfully with a culturally homogeneous group of LTC providers in the rural Midwest. Course materials and training approaches, including both a direct-training and a train-the-trainer format, were further evaluated with culturally and educationally diverse LTC staff in the rural Southeast. The training materials were perceived as useful and relevant; however, methods used to train staff must be tailored to the population's individual needs. (RH).
