AnnotationThe relationships between behaviour, psychological functioning, the caring environment and subsequent institutionalisation in patients with dementia living at home with a carer was examined in this UK study. A total of 100 persons with dementia who were living at home with a carer, in Oxfordshire, participated in the study. The carers were interviewed and the subjects with dementia were assessed cognitively at 4-monthly intervals. The characteristics which best predicted institutionalisation one year later were found to be: excessive night-time activity; immobility or difficulty in walking; incontinence; being away from a carer for more than 16 hours per week; and being cared for by a female carer. Aggressive behaviour was not associated with an increased chance of institutionalisation one year later, although it was more prevalent 4 months before entering an institution. (AKM).
