Annotation | From April 1999, most health commissioning will involve Primary Care Groups working in partnership with local health authorities and social services departments. Two recent studies provide insights into inter-agency and multi-disciplinary relationships. In `Working together: primary care involvement in commissioning social care services' (National Primary Care Research and Development Centre, University of Manchester, 1997), Kirstein Rummery and Caroline Glendinning suggest that barriers to collaboration may have become `more resistant and impermeable'. They highlight differences in finances which may lead to health needs overshadowing social care needs; but positive outcomes may include reducing duplication of assessments, and the promotion of inter-professional working. `Social work in general practice: dilemmas and solutions' by Mark Lymbery (Journal of Inter-professional Care, vol 12, no 2, 1998) examines examples of social workers and primary health care teams working together, focusing on structural/organisational, professional/cultural, and inter-personal perspectives. Both studies indicate that there is now a growing evidence base on which to draw. (RH). |
