AnnotationThis investigation examined 89 long-term smokers and 76 never smokers who were 55 years or older on a battery of standardised instruments that assessed physical and psychological well-being. Smokers reported that they were less satisfied with their physical health and daily activities, and experienced more psychological distress than never smokers. Predictably, a higher percentage of older smokers reported having physical problems including trouble breathing, as well as a history of lung disease that they attributed to lifelong smoking. Although both smokers and never smokers acknowledged the importance of health promotion activities, fewer smokers reported engaging in these behaviours. The data suggest that relative to never smokers of similar age, late-life chronic smokers who desire to quit may have a more pessimistic outlook about their physical and psychological health, as well as their ability to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours.
