Annotation | Alcohol abuse has been conceptualised as coping behaviour that reflects deficits in problem-focused coping behaviour specific to an individual's high risk (antecedent) conditions for use. Within this framework, this study developed an ABC model (antecedents, behaviour, consequences) for older alcohol abusers that incorporated self-management and cognitive behavioural technique. The emphasis was on teaching older alcohol abusers skills necessary to controlling the bases for their drinking behaviour, and setting the occasion for those skills to be implemented. Each client's recent high-risk situations for drinking is identified using a structured interview. Within standardised psycho-educational groups, or modules, they were taught to identify their personal high-risk situations and the self-management skills necessary to prevent relapse. This article describes the methods and skill areas taught within these modules, with recommendations for age-specific, supportive, group approaches to treatment of older alcohol abusers. (AKM). |
