AnnotationThe term `volunteer co-ordinator' covers a wide range of activities including recruiting, placing, supporting and managing volunteers. This study of the role and responsibilities of volunteer co-ordinators was undertaken in 1996-97 by researchers from the School of Applied Social Studies, the Robert Gordon University, and funded by the Social Work Services Group of the Scottish Office. It is based on information collected from two Scottish local authority areas - Edinburgh and Highland Region - reflecting both urban and rural localities. This summary outlines the report's findings with regard to the selection, supply, and support (including training and supervision) of volunteers. Other co-ordinating tasks examined included assessing volunteers' commitment, the use of contracts, and expenses. Comments were also gathered on changes in volunteer co-ordination since implementation of care in the community. (RH).
