AnnotationThe term `volunteer co-ordinator' covers a wide range of activities including recruiting, placing, supporting and managing volunteers. This report describes a study undertaken in 1996-97 on the roles and responsibilities of volunteer co-ordinators in Edinburgh, an urban area, and in Highland Region, a rural area. Researchers from the School of Applied Social Studies, the Robert Gordon University carried out the study, which was funded by the Social Work Services Group of the Scottish Office. The research examined practice in engaging, supporting, organising, deploying, co-ordinating and managing volunteers. The effects of external influences such as care in the community, and reorganisation of local authorities are discussed. The implications for good practice in employment of volunteers is outlined. The report concludes that while volunteering is not cost-free, it is important to ensure that volunteers' good will and commitment is not alienated. (RH).
