AnnotationPeople with learning disabilities are living longer today compared to their counterparts in previous generations, which has implications for service planning and delivery. The Positive Futures project was set up to consider the pros and cons of different service models and to develop key elements of good practice. This report presents key elements of good practice for commissioners and purchasers of services, a checklist for providers of things that need to be done if they are to develop their service to the standards set by the key elements of good practice, and a resource and information pack. This pack is aimed at support staff working directly with older people with learning disabilities. It identifies eight key areas that need to be addressed in supporting an older person with a learning disability, contains practically based exercises, and gives advice on where to get more information and help. Specific topics covered in this section include: listening skills; communication skills; the ageing process; health and well-being; medication; dementia; reminiscence; relationships; leisure activities; risk; death and dying; wills and the management of finances. A list of useful organisations is included. (AKM).
