AnnotationThis three-part discussion and practice paper focuses on the need for social housing and care service providers whose customers are older people, to adopt an integrated approach to the services they offer. Part One highlights the dramatic changes that have occurred in the welfare system in the UK. It describes the important role being played in welfare and social care by Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) including not-for-profit and charitable organisations such as the Abbeyfield Society. Part Two describes the innovative approach developed and now adopted by Abbeyfield, based on a model which sets out to provide services in an integrated way which meets people's needs for different kinds of services at different times in their lives. Part Three assesses the appropriateness of the Abbeyfield exemplar model approach, and identifies seven key lessons for good practice, which concern: design and living arrangements; housing and care practice on involving consumers; partnerships and advocacy; location; being part of and serving the community; moving with the times and changing cultures; and subjecting plans to independent critics and consumers.
