AnnotationThe National Consumer Council (NCC) represents the interests of domestic consumers, and has a specific responsibility to represent the interests of disadvantaged consumers. This is the NCC's response to the consultation, `Water charging in England and Wales - a new approach'. Comments are made on the paper's lack of detailed information and unclear objectives: are these to introduce a fairer method of charging, or to reduce water use? The NCC does not consider it worth spending resources on seeking ways to extend competition in this sector, given that the water industry is a monopoly. It calls on the government to carry out more research, to develop a long-term water management plan for a fairer system of charging and sustainable use of water. (RH).
