AnnotationOn 9 July 1997 the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) announced that it intended to undertake an enquiry on residential care homes and nursing homes. The main aims were to: examine what information was provided to residents about the residential care home; the use of contracts; the financial protection given to residents; and the effectiveness of the complaints procedure. Views were sought and received from residents, relatives, pressure groups, government departments, local authorities, and health authorities. In addition, a survey of 965 residents in homes in England, Scotland and Wales was conducted. Recommendations to care home owners include: to provide comprehensive and clearly written information; to ensure that contracts are given to all residents; and to provide clearer information on complaints' procedures. The report also calls for inspectors to be given power to monitor the handling of residents' finances against national enforceable standards. (AKM).
