AnnotationPrevention of functional decline in older people is a national priority in the US, and senior centres have been identified as potentially important venues for health promotion activities. In this study, a trial of multi-component disability prevention programme was conducted at a senior centre, involving 100 older adults, who were recruited for 6 months. All members of the experimental group received an exercise intervention, nutrition counselling, and a home safety assessment. Smoking and alcohol interventions were delivered to at-risk subjects. Results showed that 85% of intervention subjects completed the 6-month programme, with over 90% attendance at exercise classes. After 6 months, the intervention group had significantly better score on 7 of 8 Short-Form (SF-36) health survey and fewer depressive symptoms than controls. (AKM).
