AnnotationThe purpose of this study was to examine if there were differences in student nurses' knowledge about and attitudes toward the older population, and their desire to work with older people, in the first year at nursing school and at completion, at a Baccalaureate College of Nursing in the US. Eighty-seven students from the main campus and forty-seven students from a satellite campus completed Palmore's Facts on Aging Quizzes (FAQ1 and FAQ2), and the Facts on Aging and Mental Health Quiz (FAMHQ). Results showed that both groups of students showed less negative attitudes towards older people upon completion of the course. From 25% to 52% of all students indicated that they "really like" working with older people on post-tests. Recommendations include evaluation and revisions of nursing school curricula for gerontological content, assisting faculty to enhance expertise in gerontology, and encouraging students to pursue career paths in gerontology.
