Annotation | The series of consultation papers on modernising local government will provide major challenges and opportunities to local authorities to improve the way they provide services to all sections of the community and older people are a significant part of this challenge. Some recent initiatives are discussed and include BGOP - Better Government for Older People. Three further short articles also discuss further initiatives. A unique project asking older people about their experiences of care services has been carried out in Kirkby, Merseyside by Knowsley Council and the Kings Fund. The Millennium Debate of the Age is described by Simon Knighton, its Director, as "the biggest social campaign ever envisaged outside government." Finally, John Belcher as Chief Executive of the Anchor Trust advocates the strengths of preventative services and strategies that must underpin future care of the older population. (KJ). |
