AnnotationThe assessment of behavioural change associated with the dementias as an example of the assessment of behaviour in the chronic care population in general is reviewed. In this context, "behaviour" refers to syndromes that commonly co-occur with dementias, such as delusions, hallucinations, depressive and anxious features, agitation, apathy, and withdrawal. These syndromes are used as the organising framework for a selective review of behaviour rating scales applied to patients with dementia. Six behaviour instruments are examined: the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale; the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Behaviour Rating Scale for Dementia; the Multidimensional Observation Scale for Elderly Subjects; the Neuropsychiatric Inventory; the Psychogeriatric Dependency Rating Scale; and the Revised Memory and Behavioural Problems Checklist. These were chosen, because they are especially well suited to this clinical problem, and offer a spectrum of strengths and weaknesses illustrating the current state of the art. (RH).
