Annotation | The US Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act 1997 (OBRA) requires assessment of communicative and cognitive function of nursing home residents as a prelude to planning their care. The law mandates the use of assessment tools that are valid and produce reproducible results. In this article, those measures of communicative function designed for and standardised on dementia patients are reviewed, as well as other measures of communicative function that have been administered to dementia patients.
