AnnotationIt has been suggested that older people being cared for by their spouses are better cared for than those looked after by their children. They are said to have a better outcome, and be less likely to be admitted to long-term care. This supposition is complicated by the differences in the characteristics of the two groups. In particular, those looked after by a spouse are inevitably younger than those looked after by the younger generation. The aim of this paper was to test the hypothesis that the identity of the main caregiver has an effect upon the mortality or changes in dependency of older people over time, in this study over 4 years.
