AnnotationPast research has indicated that it is important to consider the neighbourhood environment with regard to housing for older people. Because rural and urban environments differ, neighbourhood preferences may also vary. This study uses data from the Canadian Aging Research Network to ascertain the neighbourhood amenity preferences of a sample of rural and urban living older people in Manitoba. Some 1,400 older people were asked to consider the importance of 11 amenities in a place to live. Factor analysis of these items indicates that planners need to consider three broad amenity areas: necessities, social interaction, and life enrichment. Bivariate cross-tabulations and multiple regression results demonstrate the importance of social interaction amenities to rural older people, confirming the instrumental importance that social relations serve for those living in rural areas.
