Annotation | Some policy options for housing provision for disabled older people in the US and Canada are described, including: government housing construction; housing vouchers and certificates; community service programmes; grants, loans and reimbursements; building codes and regulations; and human rights legislation. The strengths and weaknesses of these policy approaches are contrasted. The present emphasis in the US is on individual housing rights, compared with a more social welfare approach in Canada. A possible model for making the housing environment more responsive to the needs of older disabled people is discussed. (RH). |
