Annotation | `24-hour cover' refers to a method by which residents can be confident of getting help at any time of the day or night. The purpose of providing 24-cover in Abbeyfield very sheltered houses is to ensure: continued independence of residents; that residents get help in emergency situations; and enhanced and real security for residents. This paper aims to help staff and volunteers in Abbeyfield societies to consider 24-hour cover as a way of meeting residents' changing needs and expectations. Case studies describe how 24-hour care works in practice. However, it is also pointed out that societies should review the needs of residents and the options available, before making major changes to working arrangements. (RH). |
