Annotation | The major industrialised countries are undergoing a significant demographic transition, with low fertility rates and reduced mortality rates. This book examines the effects of population ageing, with the associated factor of immigration, on social expenditure and public finance. Following an introduction to the main issues concerning population ageing and migration, the book discusses the demographic and economic aspects of the transition towards an older population. Within this framework the impact of ageing on government budgets and the labour market are analysed, and some of the economic, social and demographic issues related to immigration are discussed, focusing on Australia. The book also projects population structure and social expenditure patterns under a variety of assumptions concerning the number and composition of immigrants, using techniques which can be applied to any country.
